To be honest, I was tired of this blog's prior theme before I even put it on - it was basically the same as the one before, only slightly responsive so I could fit larger images without them being cut off - but my lack of artistic creativity meant I was basically stuck with it until something drastic happened.
Well, something drastic did happen - Cohost, the last good social media site, shut down. Like most cohost users I mourned this news, but after that I decided to ensure the spirit of chosting would never die.
This was a long-winded way of saying I copied the Cohost theme for my blog, but this took way more effort than I expected and I wanna pat myself on the back a little. It's been a long time since I've played around in the frontend so I had to unlearn a couple outdated ways of doing things, and in retrospect I probably should've stuck with Tailwind instead of converting to Bootstrap, but overall I'm really proud of how it turned out.
Hopefully some former choster will stumble across this blog a couple years from now and remember a place online that didn't try to give you a mental breakdown for increased engagement; hopefully it brightens their day.
Way back around 2012 or so I had the urge to revamp my website - I wanted to get rid of JavaScript on my homepage and I spent more time updating WordPress than writing in it. Still young, bright-eyed and ready to show the world what I was made of, I promptly finished a mockup for the new splash page and subsequently left the idea to die in my mental "things to get to" pile.
Over time, my site got more and more outdated with its use of a Flash-based gallery, nonexistent mobile support and lack of TLS - and not that this was breaking me, but as my hosting provider moved on I was getting charged more since I was still stuck in 2009.
Fortunately(?), this extended beer flu funemployment has me revisiting some of my old ideas, and this was one of them. So after freshening and modernizing my old work, I finally have a website I'm no longer embarassed to admit is mine. Some things might look superficially similar but all the underlying tech is new, most importantly the switch from WordPress to a static site generator (running 3.5.1 in 2020 is only forgivable in the light that the ones COVID-19 doesn't kill will be begging for death when the election news ramps up again and nobody cares about the version of WordPress you're running when you're dead). There's still a few things left I want to do and a couple things I want to change, but this is definitely good enough for me to release as is (it's also cheaper to run).
It took me much longer than I hoped it would, but I've finally put the finishing touches on my blog theme! I'm calling it Nightshade, and you can get it from Github, since they currently don't allow for child themes in the theme directory. I've also fixed the broken links on the id3autosort page and got the screenshots working again. Now if I could only find out why the javascript on the code page is running so slow...
It took me a lot longer than I thought it would, but I finally managed to get my pictures hosted through S3 - now my webhosting bill should plummet since I won't be paying a penny per megabyte (which each picture needed two of, btw).
FINALLY! After almost two years since I bought the domain, and about 2 months since I decided to make it more than a blog, all the parts of mischivous.com (which might become mischivous::com) that are supposed to be up are up! Geez it feels good to finally have that done - now I really feel like a web designer!
Pretty soon most of the website will be live (I just want to get up my splash page and gallery up today, I'll get my code and about pages up later, hopefully sometime this weekend). Ooh, I'm so excited!
I was too busy bitching to remember to write that I'm going to be posting reviews of stuff now - or at least, start up again. Hell, I've got the category, why not use it? I'll be doing movies, albums, and products I come across and think worthy of reviewing.
It's on now! Going to Calculus, be back later!
Widgetifying my theme is hard. Especially when I don't know what I'm doing. And I gotta go catch my bus, so this will have to wait until tomorrow.
What the FUCK!!! I cannot believe that I used so much bandwidth by letting people download a movie! Especially since I had ~$19 before I uploaded it, bandwidth is about $.01 per meg, and I have less than $4 in my account now! I f you didn't download it, TS, since I removed it, but I uploaded it to google video, and left a link in the 404. if you missed it, the link is http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7542370854402675055
